Overseas Basketball Salary: What Players Really Earn by League (2026)
What overseas basketball players really earn in 2026, from the numbers leagues publish: EuroLeague payroll rules, France's club payrolls, minimum salaries, the G League benchmark and unpaid wages.

Overseas basketball players earn anything from small part-time deals in lower European leagues to millions at the top of the EuroLeague, and individual contracts are almost never published. What leagues do publish is enough to see the real range: in France's top league in 2025–26, the smallest club payroll for players and coaches was €968,000 gross and the biggest €20.1 million.
This guide uses only numbers that leagues, federations and official bodies publish, plus clearly labeled estimates from serious reporting. If you have seen salary tables with a neat monthly figure for every league, read the next section first.
Why You Can't Trust Most Overseas Salary Tables
Many of the salary tables online come from companies selling exposure camps and showcases. They are marketing, not data, for three reasons:
- Contracts are private. Most leagues do not publish player salaries. Even in Latvia, where clubs like VEF Rīga announce their budgets, individual pay is not disclosed.
- Nobody says net or gross. A €3,000 net monthly salary and a €3,000 gross one are very different jobs.
- Packages are left out. An apartment, a car and flights can be worth as much as the salary in a small league, or be missing entirely.
Our guide on how to play pro basketball overseas covers the whole process. This post is about the money.
Net, Gross and the Package: How Overseas Contracts Work
Net is the norm for imports. Contracts for imported players in Europe are usually quoted net: the amount the player receives, with the club paying the tax. That is why EuroLeague's own payroll rules are set in net euros, while France's official payroll figures are gross.
The package matters. Players interviewed by Andscape described clubs that give "a place to live. A car," plus "four or five flights round-trip" a season. Not every club does. If it is not in the contract, assume you will pay for it.
Pay is monthly, usually over the season. France's collective agreement for professional basketball requires salaries to be paid no later than the seventh day after the end of each month. Elsewhere, payment terms are whatever the contract says, which is why the contract matters more than the headline number.
Bonuses are extra, and conditional. Team results, playoffs and individual awards are common bonus triggers. Count them as upside, not as salary.
Four questions to ask about any offer: Net or gross? Per month or per season? How many months? What is included?
How Much Do EuroLeague Players Make?
The EuroLeague is the top of the market, and its rules give a sense of scale. Its Competitive Balance Standards, phased in from 2025–26, work like a soft cap:
- Base Remuneration Level: €10 million net for 2026–27. Clubs whose payroll goes above it pay a luxury tax.
- Low Remuneration Level: €6,689,577 net for licensed clubs in 2026–27, according to BasketNews, a minimum level of player spending.
- Fines are real. In April 2026, four clubs were fined for going over the Base Remuneration Level in 2025–26: Panathinaikos (€3,065,691), Anadolu Efes (€1,071,676), Hapoel Tel Aviv (€998,027) and Olympiacos (€303,290).
BasketNews estimated 2025–26 net player payrolls from club reports and its own sources. It put Panathinaikos at €26.5–27.0 million and Real Madrid at €18.5–19.0 million, with the bottom eight clubs between €4.5 million and €9.5 million. Those are estimates, not official figures. For a club outside the very top, Lithuania's Žalgiris Kaunas has a projected 2026–27 budget of €28.8 million, with €19.7 million for player and staff salaries, according to BasketNews.
A EuroLeague payroll is spread across a full roster, and a handful of stars take a large share. Most players in Europe never get near it.
France: The League That Publishes Every Club's Payroll
France's LNB publishes each club's budget and payroll, checked by its financial watchdog, the DNCCG. It is the best public data on European basketball pay. For the Betclic ÉLITE in 2025–26:
| Betclic ÉLITE | ÉLITE 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Average club budget | €10.3 million | over €3.5 million |
| Average payroll | €3.47 million | €938,000 |
| Smallest payroll | €968,000 | €510,000 |
| Biggest payroll | €20.1 million | €1.40 million |
The median Betclic ÉLITE payroll was €1.86 million. These payrolls are gross and cover the head coach, assistant coaches, professional players and young players in the club's system, not only the first-team roster. Monaco (€20.1 million) and Paris (€8.0 million) pull the average up; most clubs sit between €1.2 million and €2.3 million.
What that means for a player: divide Le Portel's €968,000 between a dozen players and their coaches, and the average is well under €100,000 gross a year. Imported players often earn more than the average teammate, but the money has limits even in one of Europe's strongest domestic leagues.

Germany, Spain and Italy: What the Rules Tell You
Germany. In December 2025, the easyCredit BBL published planned budgets for its 18 clubs: €165 million in combined planned revenue, with player costs at 36% of budgets, about €59 million across the league. Those are employer gross figures. In the second division, the ProA, teams must have at least two German players on court at all times. In the third division, the ProB, each team can field only one player from outside the EU, so jobs for Americans there are few.
Spain. The ACB's collective agreement with the players' union set a single minimum salary of €28,000 gross a year in 2021. That is the floor for the top league, not a typical salary. The second division, the Primera FEB, is outside that agreement.
Italy. Clubs in the top league, the LBA, have budgets from about €40 million at Olimpia Milano to €3.7 million at Scafati in 2026–27, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. Those budgets cover all club costs, not only salaries. The Italian federation's licensing rules require Serie A clubs to show a revenue budget of at least €2.5 million and to prove, with signed releases and pay slips, that players have been paid.
Lithuania and Latvia
The LKL is one of Europe's strongest domestic leagues, Žalgiris's EuroLeague budget is not typical of it, and the league has a warning in its history. In 2020, when the season was stopped for COVID-19, the LKL and its clubs agreed not to pay players for the rest of the season. Lithuania's Competition Council fined the league and 10 clubs for it in 2021.
In the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League, VEF Rīga announced a 2026–27 salary budget of over €560,000 within a total budget of more than €2 million, up from about €400,000 the season before. That is one of the league's bigger clubs, and it covers a whole roster.
The G League as a Benchmark
For Americans, the G League is the alternative at home. Under its first collective bargaining agreement, signed in 2025, the base salary is $45,000 for 2025–26, rising 3% a year through 2028–29. Teams provide individual housing at home and hotel rooms on the road.
So a solid contract in a mid-level European league can beat the G League on money, especially once housing and a car are included. The G League's advantage is NBA exposure, not pay.
How Good Is Each League?
Money roughly follows level. Athletedom's 2026–27 ratings for some of the leagues Americans most often join, on our senior scale from 1 to 99:
| League | Country | Athletedom rating, 2026–27 |
|---|---|---|
| Betclic ÉLITE | France | 79–85 |
| LKL | Lithuania | 74–80 |
| Primera FEB | Spain, second tier | 70–76 |
| Orlen Basket Liga | Poland | 68–74 |
| Serie A2 | Italy, second tier | 65–71 |
| Latvian-Estonian Basketball League | Latvia and Estonia | 63–69 |
| ProA | Germany, second tier | 63–69 |
| Korisliiga | Finland | 62–68 |
| Basketligan | Sweden | 62–68 |
| ProB | Germany, third tier | 50–56 |
For comparison, we rate NCAA Division I at 67–73 on the same scale, close to Poland's top league. That is why a strong Division I player can often step into the middle of this table, while France and Lithuania expect more. Each league page on Athletedom shows its teams, players, map and rating.
What Happens If an Overseas Club Doesn't Pay You?
Unpaid salary is the biggest risk in overseas basketball, and FIBA has a system for it: the Basketball Arbitral Tribunal (BAT) in Geneva.
- You need a BAT clause. BAT only hears cases where both sides agreed in writing to use it. FIBA's standard clause says any dispute from the contract "shall be submitted to the Basketball Arbitral Tribunal (BAT)." Make sure it is in your contract.
- It costs money up front. Besides a handling fee, BAT sets an advance on costs, capped at €6,000 for an award without written reasons and €9,000 for a dispute under €100,000 with reasons. The winning party usually gets its advance back.
- It has teeth. FIBA enforces BAT awards with sanctions such as bans on registering new players and on international transfers. Its published list includes more than 120 sanctioned clubs.
- It is used. BAT's published awards include claims by American players for unpaid salary against European clubs.
Before you sign, search the club's name on FIBA's sanctions list. A club that is banned from registering new players is telling you something.
How to Get a Better Contract
- Know the club's budget. In France and Germany it is public. Elsewhere, ask your agent and players who have been there.
- Compare offers on the same basis: net, per season, with the package valued.
- Get everything in writing: salary, payment dates, housing, car, flights, bonuses, and the BAT clause.
- Use an agent you can check. A good agent knows which clubs pay late. Our guide on how to get a basketball agent covers what to ask. If you want one that also builds your profile and video, Athletedom Agency works with professionals on 3–7% commission, paid only when a deal is signed.

Are overseas basketball salaries net or gross?
Contracts for imported players in Europe are usually quoted net, meaning after tax, and the club pays the tax. Official league figures are often gross. Always ask whether a number is net or gross, per month or per season, and what the package includes.
What is the minimum salary in the Spanish ACB?
Spain's ACB collective agreement set a single minimum salary of 28,000 euros gross a year in 2021, replacing an age-based scale. Primera FEB and lower Spanish leagues are not covered by that agreement.
How much does a G League player make?
Under the G League's first collective bargaining agreement, the base salary is 45,000 dollars for the 2025–26 season, rising 3% a year, and teams provide individual housing. Players on two-way NBA contracts earn more.
Does the EuroLeague have a salary cap?
Not a hard cap. Its Competitive Balance Standards set a Base Remuneration Level of 10 million euros net for 2026–27, and clubs that spend more pay a luxury tax. In April 2026 four clubs were fined for exceeding it in 2025–26, led by Panathinaikos at over 3 million euros.
What can you do if an overseas club doesn't pay you?
If your contract has a Basketball Arbitral Tribunal clause, you can take the club to FIBA's arbitration tribunal in Geneva. FIBA enforces its awards with sanctions such as bans on registering new players, and more than 120 clubs have been sanctioned.
Do overseas basketball players get housing and a car?
Often, yes. Packages for imported players commonly include an apartment, a car and flights home, but it depends on the club and the contract. Get every part of the package written into the contract.
